Dental documentation has three jobs, and AI tools handle them differently. Voice perio charting fills in measurements. Hard-tissue charting records conditions and treatment. Clinical notes record the visit. In the last year, practice software and imaging vendors have started bundling these, so the question is no longer just "which scribe?" but "standalone or built in?"

Vendor facts below come from each vendor's own pages or the named third-party sources, as of October 2026. Accuracy and time-saving figures from vendors are their own claims and are not independently verified.

    TL;DR

    • Decide which job hurts most: perio charting, restorative charting or narrative notes. Tools are not equally good at all three.
    • Ask where each data type lands in your PMS. A note pasted into a text field can't fill a perio chart.
    • Vendors claim 95% to 99% accuracy. We could not find peer-reviewed validation of commercial perio charting, and small independent studies found probing depths and recession were the weakest fields.
    • Decide how long audio is kept, and how patients are told, before you buy.
    • Pilot in one hygiene column for two weeks and compare against manual charting.

What a dental AI scribe is

Software that captures what the clinician says, or the conversation in the room, and turns it into structured chart entries or a written note. Dental versions need to understand tooth numbering, surfaces, CDT procedure descriptions, probing depths, recession, mobility and furcation, and the language of materials and techniques.

    Three ways they work

    Voice charting

The clinician calls out measurements or findings, and the system fills in chart fields. It is strongest for perio charting, where it replaces a second person writing numbers down.

    Ambient notes

The system listens to the whole visit and drafts a note. It suits a natural workflow, but it needs good audio and raises more consent and retention questions.

    Dictation

The clinician dictates a note after the exam and the AI structures it. It is more controlled, but it takes extra time.

    Tools compared

    Bola AI

A specialist vendor. Per MedAI Directory's September 2026 comparison, it covers voice perio, voice restorative charting, wake-word clinical notes and an ambient scribe that suggests CDT codes. It lists integrations with Dentrix, Dentrix Ascend, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, Curve and Fuse, and powers voice features inside Open Dental and Curve. Pricing is quote-based. Its figures (10,000+ users, a 99% accuracy rate) are vendor claims.

    Kiroku

A notes tool founded in 2017, registered in London. It uses clickable note templates and a Co-Pilot that listens and fills the template. Kiroku says audio recordings are never stored, only transcribed and then removed. It is a notes tool and not for perio charting, and its PMS integration is mostly copy and paste. Ask for a signed BAA and US pricing.

    Overjet Voice

From a radiograph AI vendor. It covers ambient clinical notes, hands-free perio charting, hard-tissue charting and referral letter drafts, in English and Spanish. Overjet says it keeps encrypted audio for seven years. Pricing is not published.

    Pearl Voice

Announced April 8, 2026 by Pearl, a radiograph AI vendor. It covers ambient transcription, SOAP-style notes, voice perio charting and 30+ procedure templates. Ask Pearl for its supported PMS list. Pricing is not published.

    VideaHealth Voice Notes

Launched October 2025. It offers an ambient mode and a quick dictation mode, with click-to-activate consent and recording controls. Its figures on completeness and time saved are vendor claims.

    Dentrix Ascend voice tools

Henry Schein One built Voice Notes and Voice Perio into Dentrix Ascend. Voice Notes is included in some Ascend packages, and ambient capture requires the Accelerate package. These are for Dentrix Ascend, not Dentrix desktop.

    Denti.AI

Lists OneStop Clinical at $333 a month billed annually ($399 monthly) per location with unlimited users and no setup fee, and OneStop Clinical+ at $499 annually ($599 monthly). It lists integrations with Dentrix, Dentrix Ascend, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, Denticon, CareStack and Curve. Confirm BAA terms with the vendor.

    DeepCura

Lists $129 a month per provider on monthly billing, or $999 a year, with volume discounts. It states that it signs a BAA.

    What the research says

Independent research on voice perio accuracy is small and early. As summarized by MedAI Directory:

    • A January 2026 study in the Journal of Dental Sciences tested a research system on 15 recordings. Overall accuracy was 67.4%. Probing depth was 53.3% and gingival recession 52.0%, while furcation and mobility fields were above 90%.
    • An April 2026 feasibility study in Healthcare Informatics Research found three-digit number recognition of 88.3% and 96.8%, but complete-phrase matching of only 36.7% and 52.5%. A clip-on microphone gave stable recognition.

Neither study tested the commercial products above, which are trained on dental speech and should do better. The lessons still hold: numbers are the hard part, one position error can cascade, the microphone matters, and accents and mixed languages need testing.

Two other studies are worth knowing. A study in the Journal of Dental Research (King's College London, 2025) tested 10 speech-recognition tools on 200 orthodontic clinical summaries. The most accurate had a 3.5% error rate on dental terms, the best commercial tool had 6.2%, and every system made some clinically significant errors, so a person must still review the note. On time saved, a 2025 randomized trial of outpatient physicians at UCLA Health (a medRxiv preprint, not yet peer reviewed, and not dental) found one ambient scribe cut time spent writing notes by 9.5% against the control group, while the other showed no significant change. Both improved burnout measures, and occasional inaccuracies still needed review.

    Standalone or bundled?

    1. Where does each data type land? Perio values should go to perio fields and notes to the note.
    2. What happens to the audio? Retention ranges from none to seven years.
    3. How are patients told? Rhode Island's 2026 law requires providers, including dentists, to notify patients when AI is used to document visits, and Louisiana requires verbal disclosure of AI transcription before recording. Rules vary by state.
    4. Who suggests the codes? Whoever signs the note owns the code, whichever tool suggested it.
    5. How locked in do you want to be? Bundled tools tie your workflow to the vendor.
    6. Is there a BAA that covers the AI subprocessors? Get it signed and ask who processes the audio.

A two-week pilot in one hygiene column

    • Days 1-2: set up a proper microphone for each operatory, confirm the PMS connection on your version, sign the BAA and write the patient notice.
    • Days 3-7: for 10 to 15 perio exams, chart by hand as usual while the hygienist also uses voice. Compare site by site and count mismatches, especially probing depths and recession.
    • Days 3-10: test the noisiest operatory, back-to-back patients and the clinician with the strongest accent.
    • Days 8-14: audit 20 AI-assisted notes against what happened and what was billed.
    • Day 14: count time honestly, including correction time.

    Where Aron fits

Aron doesn't offer a clinical scribe. It covers the front office: the AI receptionist, phones, texting, forms that write back to your PMS, reviews and revenue tools. If you add a scribe, check that it doesn't duplicate any recording or consent notice already used on your phone system. Aron handles call-recording consent on its own phone lines.

    FAQ

Are dental AI scribes accurate enough?

Vendors claim accuracy between 95% and 99%, but no vendor has published peer-reviewed validation of its commercial perio charting that we could find. Small independent studies found probing depth and recession were the weakest fields. Review every note and measurement before you sign it.

Do I have to tell patients I am using an AI scribe?

In some states, yes. Rhode Island's 2026 law requires providers, including dentists, to notify patients when AI is used to document visits, and Louisiana requires verbal disclosure of AI transcription before recording starts. Rules vary by state, so ask your attorney about yours.

Does Aron offer an AI scribe?

No. Aron is a front-office platform: AI receptionist, phones, texting, forms, reviews and revenue tools. It doesn't do clinical charting or notes.

What is the difference between voice perio charting and an ambient scribe?

Voice perio charting turns spoken measurements into structured chart fields. An ambient scribe listens to the visit and writes a narrative note. Ask which jobs a tool does and how each reaches your PMS.

What does a dental AI scribe cost?

Published prices vary. As of October 2026, Denti.AI lists $333 a month billed annually ($399 monthly) per location with unlimited users, and DeepCura lists $129 a month per provider. Bola AI, Overjet Voice and Pearl Voice don't publish prices. Ask for a written quote.

    Where do the notes go?

It depends on the vendor. Some write into structured PMS fields, and some give you text to copy and paste. Ask for a live demo on your PMS version.

    What happens to the recordings?

It varies. Overjet says it keeps encrypted audio for seven years, and Kiroku says it doesn't store audio after transcription. Decide on a retention policy before you pick a tool.

Should I choose a standalone scribe or one bundled with my PMS or imaging software?

Pilot both if you can. Bundled voice tools may be included in packages you already pay for, but they tie your documentation workflow to that vendor. A standalone tool keeps those choices separate.
